How to Get Rid of Under-eye Bags & Puffiness
Updated: 5 days ago
The eyes are the window to the soul. They are a focal point of the face and a large part of how we communicate.
The eyes are also where we show stress and lack of sleep.
Ever notice those pockets of swelling under the eyes? That unsightly puffiness that some of us get when we are tired, or sick, or just over it. Under-eye bags are the worst and they bring a whole new meaning to the word “baggage”.
Very similar to dark circles, under-eye bags can be attributed to different things, including genetics. For some people, under-eye inflammation is caused by things like sleep schedule, stress levels, diet and even allergies.
The good news is that they are treatable and not necessarily just with surgery.
Depending on what causes your puffy under-eye, a home remedy may solve your problems. In some cases, it is as easy as a cold compress held on the skin around the eye for a few minutes at a time and limiting your salt intake throughout the day. Some patients have even said they use teabags as compresses.
For more mild under-eye bags, there’s a series of non-surgical cosmetic treatments like chemical peels and over-the- counter products that can be applied.
If you have more pronounced under-eye bags and circles, there’s always the fan favorite injectable option which provides the most instant gratification for patients. Tear trough fillers can be used to help reduce the appearance of puffiness and under-eye bags around and under the eyes. This is a great option for younger patients who have not yet developed severe sagging or puffiness, but still want a refreshed look.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers like Belotero, Restylane and Versa work well for the delicate under-eye area because they are thin and clear. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the skin but it diminishes with age. Because it’s naturally in the skin, HA fillers are safe and effective at smoothing out the skin’s surface and adding volume.
It takes about 5 minutes for Dr. Azzi to perform the injections. Results are immediate and will improve over the following 2 weeks. Over time, your body naturally absorbs the filler but results will last 6-18 months, depending on the individual.
For those who want a more permanent solution, lower blepharoplasty may be the best option. Also known as a lower eyelid lift, this procedure focuses on the skin and fat underneath the eyes. Typically, patients that are interested in lower blepharoplasty have dark bags and very puffy circles beneath their eyes, often giving them a tired appearance. The procedure itself takes from 30-60 minutes right in Dr. Azzi’s office with no general anesthesia.
