Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)

Jupiter / Palm Beach, Florida

Misshapen or protruding ears is a common source of self-consciousness for adults and children alike - and it can have a devastating effect on a person’s self-esteem.

Dr. Azzi is an expert in cosmetic ear surgery. He travels all over the world reconstructing children with deformed ears using their own ribs as grafts. He has also authored chapters on the subject in plastic surgery textbooks.

Otoplasty typically is performed when the child begins to feel self-conscious or when an adult decides they want to improve the protrusion.

Many surgeons will perform otoplasty when the ears reach mature size (around 5-6 years of age). Dr. Azzi also waits this minimal amount of time, but his philosophy for children is to wait until they ask for otoplasty to be done. The reason he advocates for this is because it allows the child to participate in the decision, which typically means better cooperation and a better outcome. Second, otoplasty is a simple in-office procedure with almost no pain. If a child is mature enough to ask for otoplasty ear reshaping, they are typically old enough to sit for a few shots to make them numb to allow in-office otoplasty under local anesthesia.
