Traveling for Plastic Surgery

If you want to travel to another state or another country for plastic surgery, consider taking certain precautions prior to your arrival. While traveling for certain procedures is 100% acceptable, there are certain understandings and steps the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery suggests patients take prior to undergoing any procedure.

Planning will be key for this type of situation. If you’re a patient who would like to use health insurance, it is important to quadruple check that your insurance will cover an out of state and/or out of country procedure prior to travelling. It’s also important to check whether your surgeon accepts insurance.

Creating a plan for follow-up care is also extremely important. Even when surgeries or procedures are performed properly, complications can occur during the healing process. If you have complications once you return home, it is important to have a plan for what doctor will care for you. If the doctor who performed the procedure would like to treat follow-ups or complications themselves, room and board will be necessary.

Depending on how intense the procedure is, finding somewhere to recover that is close to the doctor’s office is very important. Traveling too soon after certain surgeries increases the risk of pulmonary embolism and blood clots. Find out if the facility is equipped to offer care for your post-operative needs before scheduling any kind of procedure.

Fully understanding the risks of traveling for surgery is a must. While it can be safe and wonderful results can be achieved, traveling for surgery requires more pre-work than local procedures. While patient safety is of the utmost importance to all surgeons, it isn’t safe to assume your surgeon will guide you along the way. So do your homework.
