Submental Liposuction: Bye Bye Double Chin

Submental Liposuction - bye bye double chin

In today’s day and age, if there is something about ourselves we’re unhappy with, there is no reason to leave it unaddressed. Unfortunately, some procedures are so niche that they go unknown by even the best of candidates. Submental liposuction falls into this category.

Aging is inevitable and the effects of aging are completely unknown until they happen. In most cases, the skin begins to lose elasticity causing a sagging affect that most men and women are never ready for. While skin all across the body loses elasticity, one of the most common and obvious signs of elasticity loss and aging occur around the face and chin areas. Depending on the patient’s age and individual goals, Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi will often recommend a neck lift, but in many cases, submental liposuction is all that’s needed.

Submental liposuction, or microliposculpture, addresses fatty tissue under the chin, beneath the jowl, and along the upper portion of the neck. In this procedure, the fatty tissue is suctioned away using small mini-cannulas and a sculpting technique. This particular type of liposuction is ideal for people with an aging neck. “Double-chin,” is the non-medical term for this type of effect. This is also ideal for younger people who have mass areas of fat under the chin. Unfortunately, this type of procedure is not ideal for clients with minimal amounts of fat in this area of the face.

Although the most common procedures for addressing these troubled areas are facelifts and necklifts, submental liposuction is far less invasive and only uses one to three tiny 0.5 centimeter incisions. Submental liposuction can also be performed wide awake with local anesthesia only, or with IV sedation. Many plastic surgeons feel that the effects of submental liposuction rivals the effect of neck lifts because of the results that can be achieved via the contouring technique.
