Americans Spent More than $16.5 Billion on Cosmetic Surgery in 2018

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or ASPS, recently revealed Americans spent over $16.5 billion on cosmetic plastic surgery and minimally invasive procedures last year, equating to a four percent increase year over year. Data used in this study is a combination of the first online national database for plastic surgery procedures, and an annual survey sent to American Board of Medical Specialties’ certified physicians most likely to perform these procedures.

The ASPS is the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons and represents over 8,000 Member Surgeons. It is the leading authority and information source on reconstructive plastic surgery and aesthetic plastic surgery.

It is common place for many surgical and minimally invasive procedures to be performed at the same time. For example, many patients will combine a facelift with soft-tissues filler injections.

According to the data provided, the most-performed minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were wrinkle treatment injections (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin), chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion. Although Botox injections are one of the more affordable procedures noted in the research, Americans spent a stunning $2.95 billion on these injections alone. The cost for laser hair removed actually decreased by over 2.5%, while chemical peel and microdermabrasion costs decreased by 4% when compared to the previous year.

The most expensive surgical procedures listed for 2018 were facelifts, tummy tucks, breast reductions and nose reshaping, which all require an incredible amount of expertise, skill and precision.

While the rise in cosmetic surgery spending and procedures isn’t necessarily surprising to some people, there are multiple reasons why this increase is happening. Of course, there is increased demand for both invasive and non-invasive procedures. We are living in the Tweakment era and we are seeing more and more millennial patients make their way into our offices. Another report found there was actually an almost 30% increase in 20 to 30 years olds getting Botox between 2010 and 2017. There are also increasing costs for some of these procedures due to scarcity and sourcing of certain products. Year over year, many injectables saw a 3% increase in cost.

It is important while seeking the opinion of different cosmetic surgeons that you don’t base your final decision solely based on price. Plastic and cosmetic surgeries are as much of an art as they are a science. The doctor’s skillset, knowledge and your comfort level with the doctor should really help guide your decision.
