Understanding Revision Rhinoplasty

Imagine you wake up from rhinoplasty surgery and your nose is bandaged. You can’t wait to see the results but you’re swollen and bruised for a while. You are finally healed enough to see the results from your rhinoplasty and you get your first look – aaaand it’s not what you anticipated. It’s not the look you wanted and you immediately find flaws. You’re devastated, BUT you’re not stuck. There is a way to fix it.

There are a multitude of reasons people seek, what is referred to as, revision rhinoplasty (revision nose job). Whether it’s the hump of the nose, the tip or unsightly bumps or folds, revision (correction) surgery can help. Revision rhinoplasty is considered to be one of the most difficult cosmetic procedures and should only be performed by specialized surgeons. The nose is a complex structure and is one of the focal features of the face.

One of the reasons bad nose jobs occur is because unseasoned cosmetic surgeons treat every single nose the same. Double-board certified facial plastic surgeon Doctor Jean-Paul Azzi explains that every patient’s nose has very different needs. A nose job should be tailored to the individual based on their facial symmetry and facial features. No two rhinoplasties are exactly alike.

Revision rhinoplasty really applies to any patient who has previously undergone rhinoplasty one or more times but would like to improve the appearance of their nose. In many cases, revision rhinoplasty requires the use of cartilage to replace damaged or deficient cartilage which was removed in the prior surgery.

Aside from scar tissue being an obstacle during revision rhinoplasty, another reason why revision rhinoplasty is such a complex surgery is because while the doctor’s job is to achieve results the patient is happy with from a cosmetic perspective, their other goal is to maintain maximal nasal function.

Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi is known for his fantastic revision results. In fact, people fly from all over the country to visit him in South Florida for a procedure. One of the things Doctor Azzi likes to remind his patients is that they didn’t do anything wrong. Whether they’re the victim of a botched surgery or just don’t like the final product of a rhinoplasty performed by another doctor, it is always okay to inquire about ways to make it better.

Facial plastic and cosmetic surgery is all about enhancing the appearance and increasing aesthetic appeal based on individual ideas of beauty. If it takes multiple tries to achieve a patient’s ideal look, then that is what it takes.

If you’re considering a revision rhinoplasty, make sure you bring as much about the initial nose job procedure with you to your consultation since your surgeon (assuming it isn’t the same one that did the initial surgery) will surely ask a line of questions to help determine the next best course of action.

Be sure to seek out a highly skilled facial plastic surgeon who specializes in revision rhinoplasty, like Dr. Azzi. You should only trust your face to a specialist.
