How to Make Botox Last Longer

It’s true what they say – all good things come to an end. But squeezing extra time out of the finer things in life never hurt anybody.

The anti-aging effects of Botox are indisputable. Injected into targeted facial muscles, Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine helping to smooth out wrinkles and lines. The injection actually disrupts the communication between the nerves and the muscle, inhibiting the muscle from contracting. But it doesn’t last forever.

Palm Beach facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Doctor Jean-Paul Azzi, says that Botox has long been a favorite of his South Florida-based patients who are looking for a quick solve to these imperfections. The only complaint? They wish the Botox effects lasted longer. Don’t we all!

While we can’t technically make Botox “last longer” (that’s a scientific blog for another day), there are things that can be done that can help prolong the effects of Botox injections and “boost your Botox” so to speak.

1. Regular, Consistent Injections

The number one way to extend the effects of Botox is to schedule your treatments at regular intervals. This will cause your facial muscles to become weaker over time, meaning the results of the Botox will last longer and will result in less frequent visits to your injector. We recommend injections every 3-4 months to begin with. Some of Dr. Azzi’s long-time Botox patients can go 6+ months before needing another treatment.

2. Muscle Movement

Many injectors will instruct you to move the muscles in the treated area directly following the injection. Some studies suggest that by moving the muscles, the Botox is able to distribute evenly, and in turn helps the Botox last longer.

3. No Face Rubbing

Keep your hands away from your face, especially the treated area. While it is encouraged to naturally move the muscle within the treatment area, it is frowned upon to engage in any kind of rubbing or pushing of the skin as it can lead to product migration. This includes no toner, facial masks, or abrasive facial scrubs for at least 24-48 hours. When cleansing your face and applying serums or moisturizers, be very gentle.

4. Limit Exposure to Sun

Botox or not, try not to spend extended periods of time out in the sun. While the sun may not directly impact the lifetime of the Botox itself, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause wrinkles which will increase the amount you need addressed. Make sure you wear SPF on your face, hands and neck, every day.

5. Choose Your Botox Injector Wisely

The face is a work of art and should managed by the care of an artist. It is essential that you seek a very skilled and highly qualified injector, ideally a board-certified facial plastic surgeon. There are many MedSpas and offices offering Botox treatments, but many are unexperienced and underqualified. It’s very important that Botox is injected in appropriate dosages and in precise injection sites for maximum effectiveness. Proper injection ensures maximum length of results.
